Quilted floor cushion tutorial

Here, we are going to share with you two quilted pillow tutorial, one Inspired by Mr. Domestic’s YouTube tutorial, and another one inspired by Missouri stars tutorial. So let’s get started..

The Magic of Fabric Selection

The journey begins with one of the most exciting parts of any sewing project: picking the fabric. Mr. Domestic emphasizes the importance of choosing fabrics with contrasting values and styles. This not only adds visual interest but also allows for a harmonious blend of colors and patterns. For this project, he incorporated a complementary grey fabric, adding a touch of sophistication to the vibrant mix.

Fun Tip: involve your kids in the fabric selection process. His daughter often helps him pick out fabrics, making it a collaborative and joyful experience. Fabric, unlike paper or clay, offers a unique tactile and visual appeal that can inspire endless creativity.

English Paper Piecing: A Beginner-Friendly Technique

Once the fabric is selected, the next step is to create the top of the pillow using English paper piecing (EPP). This technique involves cutting out paper templates, wrapping fabric around them, and then glue basting the fabric in place. EPP allows for a variety of shapes and designs, making it a versatile method for creating intricate patterns.

Mr. Domestic reassures beginners that EPP is less intimidating than it seems. The key is to start with smaller pieces and gradually work your way up to larger ones. The repetitive motion of sewing the pieces together can be meditative, providing a sense of peace and presence.

The Whip Stitch: Simple and Effective

For joining the fabric pieces, Mr. Domestic uses a whip stitch. This stitch is straightforward and requires minimal focus, making it ideal for those who want to enjoy the process without getting bogged down by technical details. He likens the motion to the spiral of a notebook, emphasizing the importance of securing each stitch with a knot before moving on to the next piece.

Sewing, for Mr. Domestic, is not just about the end product but the joy and mindfulness it brings. He strives for 95% perfection, believing that the pursuit of absolute perfection can steal the joy from the process. This philosophy is a refreshing reminder to embrace the imperfections and enjoy the journey.

Quilting with Fusible Foam

Once the EPP top is complete, it’s time to quilt. Mr. Domestic prefers using a double-sided fusible foam, which adds structure and durability to the pillow. After fusing the foam to the fabric, you can take it to the sewing machine and start quilting. He recommends straight-line quilting for its simplicity and the Zen-like state it induces.

Quilting, much like the whip stitch, can be a therapeutic activity. It allows you to focus on the present moment, letting go of any stress or worries. For those new to quilting, this project serves as a gateway, offering a taste of the satisfaction and joy that comes from creating something beautiful with your hands.

Assembling the Pillow

With the top quilted, the bulk of the work is done. The next step is to sew the pillow together, leaving an opening for stuffing. The amount of stuffing is up to you—some prefer firm pillows, while others like them soft and squishy. Mr. Domestic suggests hugging the pillow to gauge if it brings you joy. If it does, you’re done; if not, add more stuffing until it feels just right.

The Invisible Ladder Stitch: A Professional Finish

The final step is to close the opening using an invisible ladder stitch. This stitch is easier than it looks and creates a seamless finish that hides the stitches. By sewing on one side and then the other, you create a ladder-like effect. When you pull the thread taut, the stitches disappear, leaving a professional-looking seam.

For beginners, mastering the ladder stitch can be a game-changer. It adds a polished touch to your projects and can impress even seasoned sewists. Mr. Domestic’s clear instructions make it accessible, encouraging you to try it out and elevate your sewing skills.

DIY Convertible Floor Cushion

If you have kids or grandkids in your life, you’re going to love this week’s project! We’re making a convertible floor cushion that’s perfect for movie nights, reading sessions, or just lounging around.

Materials Needed

For this project, you’ll need:

  • 2 ¼ yards of canvas or heavy-duty fabric (60 inches wide)
  • Four old bed pillows
  • Basic sewing supplies (sewing machine, pins, ruler, chalk pencil, etc.)

I used a beautiful geo floral canvas by Rosa V Designs for Paint Brush Studios, which is available at Missouri Star. The 60-inch width is crucial as it allows the fabric to wrap around the pillows comfortably.

1. Fabric

Start by cutting your fabric to 60 by 70 inches. Fold the fabric so that the selvages are together, and trim off one side of the selvage. The other side can be left as is to prevent fraying, saving you some time.

2. Hemming the Edges

Fold the fabric in half again to make it easier to handle. Press and hem one long edge by folding it over twice (about half an inch each time) and sewing close to the fold. This will give you a clean, finished edge.

3. Creating the Pillow Pockets

Lay the fabric out flat with the hemmed edge towards you. Fold the bottom edge up to create a tube, ensuring the overlap is about 27 inches. Pin the edges to hold them in place. Repeat this on the other side.

4. Sewing the French Seams

With the right sides of the fabric facing out, sew a quarter-inch seam along both short edges. Trim the corners to reduce bulk, then turn the fabric inside out.

Press the seams flat and sew a wider seam (about 5/8 inch) to encase the raw edges, creating a durable French seam.

5. Marking the Pillow Sections

Fold the fabric in half lengthwise and press to create a center line. This line will be your first stitch line for the pillow sections.

Measure and mark the middle points between the center line and the outer edges, then draw lines to create four equal sections. Pin along these lines to prevent shifting.

6. Sewing the Pillow Sections

Sew along the marked lines, backstitching at the beginning and end for added strength. This will create four individual pockets for the pillows.

7. Adding the Straps

Cut two 2 ½ inch strips from the width of the fabric. Fold each strip in half lengthwise and sew along the long edge to create a tube. Turn the tubes right side out and press. Topstitch along both edges for a finished look.

Attach the straps to the center seam of the cushion, measuring six inches from the top and bottom edges. Pin in place and sew, backstitching for durability.

Final Touches

Insert the pillows into the pockets, and your convertible floor cushion is ready to use! This project is not only functional but also a great way to repurpose old pillows and add a touch of comfort to your home.

Tips and Tricks

  • Fabric Choice: Opt for a sturdy canvas or heavy-duty fabric to ensure the cushion can withstand regular use.
  • Pillow Firmness: Firmer pillows work best for this project, providing better support and structure.
  • French Seams: These seams are perfect for projects that need to be durable and washable, making them ideal for items used by kids.
